Common Side Effects
The most commonly reported skin side effects of cancer treatment include itching (Pruritis), rashes and severely dry skin (Xerosis). We covered in another blog post about how keeping the skin hydrated and well moisturized, and preventing skin barrier disruption can prevent skin related side effects from occurring or lessen their intensity.
When you’re experiencing a new side effect, it’s always good to check in with your medical team. Let them know of these developments, as they are committed to your well-being and may be able to help.
Here are some at home remedies to help soothe skin-related side effects from cancer treatment. Patch testing in a small area is always recommended before applying any new remedies and products to larger areas. For severe side effects, please check with your medical team.
Remedies to Calm & Soothe
Mineral Water Mist
Naturally occuring minerals in a thermal water mist like the ones from the brands La Roche Posay or Avene can soothe dry, sensitive and irritated skin. You can use it to mist your face or body as frequently as desired. Be sure to follow up this hydration boost with a moisturizer.
Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe vera gel is another tried and true skin soother. As with other recommended skincare products, stick with the ones with simple ingredients. Follow with a moisturizer.
Cool Moist Compress
Cool compresses can soothe itching and burning sensations. Be sure to use a clean washcloth with cool water rather than a cold water or an ice pack on sensitive skin.
Urea Cream
Urea cream at 3%-10% has been shown to help severely dry skin.
Menthol Cream
The cooling sensation of a menthol cream can help with minor aches, skin irritation and pain. For a more gentle alternative, try the MNI Cream from O Skin Love MD. They have several other products worth trying such as Radiation Relief Spray and Hand Foot Relief Cream.
Red LED Therapy
Red LED Therapy through the use of large professional panels or small handhelds for at home use have been proven to reduce inflammation and promote healing.
Although true red LED does not emit UV radiation, it is not recommended if you are experiencing severe sun sensitivity. Always choose FDA-cleared devices from reputable manufacturers that have completed clinical testing of their device. Many online products for Red LED may be knock-offs without true skin benefit. Lightstim, MMSphere and Celluma are some reputable brands.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is often recommended for cancer patients as it has many benefits. These include reduction of pain, fatigue, nausea, neuropathy and more.
